Obituary

Dennis Place passed away July 17, 2021. He was born September 27, 1946 in Pottstown, PA, to Mary and Edward Place. Dennis graduated from Owen J. Roberts High School in 1964, and attended Millersville State College where he excelled in track and football. In 1966 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was selected for Officer Candidate School. In 1968 he deployed to Vietnam and was severely wounded in 1969. Upon returning and extensive rehab, he enrolled at Villanova University. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1974, and shortly thereafter moved to Sarasota, Florida with his family.

Dennis had many interests, including running a hunt club in South Carolina, elk and pronghorn trips out west, fishing for dolphin in the keys and tarpon in Boca Grande, and quail hunting with his Grandson. Dennis participated in recent years in the Veterans Winter Sports Clinic where he competed in adaptive skiing, hockey and more. He was a fan of stock car racing and Gator football.

Dennis moved to Myakka City and fulfilled his childhood dream of owning and operating a cattle ranch. He belonged to the Sarasota County Cattlemen's Association, where he served as the State Director to the Florida Cattlemen's Association. He also belonged to the Manatee County Cattlemen's Association and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. He was a Mason, and a lifetime member and past-Monarch of the Samoor Grotto.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Sally, son John and friend Christine, son Jason (Vicki), grandson Cooper and granddaughter Morgan, and brother James (Sandy), niece Alison and nephew Chris.

Services will be held August 3rd, 11:30am, at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 S.R. 72. Gathering to follow at Bayside Community Church, 8200 Bee Ridge Rd.
